What is credit utilization?

Credit utilization is the percentage of available revolving credit you are currently using. For one card, divide the balance by the credit limit and multiply by 100. Overall utilization uses the combined balances divided by the combined limits across the cards you enter.

Credit utilizationbalance ÷ credit limit × 100

CardPlan shows both views because a reasonable overall percentage can still hide one card with much higher utilization.

Overall utilization

Add all entered balances, divide by all entered credit limits, then multiply by 100. This gives one combined utilization percentage.

Per-card utilization

Each card is calculated separately. This makes it easier to see whether one revolving account is using a much larger share of its limit.

Payment modeling

Enter an optional total payment to see how the combined balance and overall utilization would change if that amount were applied to your cards.

Is 30% credit utilization a rule?

No. There is not a universal scoring cliff at exactly 30%. The 50%, 30%, 10% and custom buttons in this calculator are comparison targets, not promises or recommendations. Lower revolving utilization is generally associated with lower credit risk, but the effect on any credit score or lending decision depends on more than one percentage.

CardPlan does not predict your credit score or guarantee an approval outcome.

When does credit card utilization update?

The balance shown on a credit report may not be the same as the balance you see in your card app today. Card issuers typically report account information periodically, often using a statement balance, and reporting timing can vary by issuer.

If timing matters, confirm your current balance, statement closing date and reporting details with your card issuer before acting.

FROM CALCULATOR TO ACTION

Know the math. Then decide which cards to pay first.

After you calculate, CardPlan can securely carry your entered cards forward so you do not have to re-enter balances and limits. From there, CardPlan helps you work through card-level utilization, available payment budget and statement timing.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Credit utilization calculator FAQ

How do I calculate credit utilization?

Divide a card’s balance by its credit limit and multiply by 100. For overall utilization, add the balances together, add the limits together, then divide the combined balance by the combined limit.

Does this calculator show overall and individual card utilization?

Yes. It calculates your combined utilization and also shows utilization for every card you enter.

Can I enter more than one credit card?

Yes. You can add multiple cards and remove cards as needed before calculating.

What happens if a balance is over its credit limit?

The calculator can show utilization above 100%. For example, a $1,200 balance on a $1,000 limit is 120% utilization.

Do I have to choose a target?

No. A target is optional. You can calculate current utilization without selecting one, or compare your balances with 50%, 30%, 10% or a custom target.

Do I have to enter a payment amount?

No. A payment is optional. If you enter one, the calculator models the combined balance and overall utilization after that payment amount.

Will this calculator tell me my credit score?

No. It calculates utilization math only. It does not estimate a score change or predict a lender’s approval decision.

Does CardPlan store my balances in the page URL?

No. Balances, limits, payment amounts and target values are not placed in the URL. If you choose to continue into CardPlan, the calculator uses a temporary opaque handoff session.

Educational planning tool. Results are estimates based on the information entered. Confirm current balances and account dates with your issuer before acting.
